Three professors and at least 18 students, many of them Asians, have received racist and sexually explicit emails, reports The Dartmouth.
The paper reports that two students have had Asian slurs written on their door, and although many minority students have received the emails, most are Asian.
Authorities say the emails are originated from fabricated email accounts.
“A few months ago, an unknown person sent racist email messages to students purporting to be from another student. Today we are seeing similar fake messages sent to other students and one faculty member,” Steve Nyman of Dartmouth wrote in an email, according to The Valley. “These messages are NOT originating from Dartmouth’s email system and are NOT authored by the student they are claiming to be.”
One of the emails obtained by The Dartmouth read “U hear me? Don’t touch the wall! Chin*s! Hi, Don’t touch the wall, that means you, Ms. [redacted name], please please watch her! and make sure [redacted name] dont wank during prax.”
Some of the emails were attributed to Abdul Agboola ’19 , but Dartmouth has determined Agboola was not the sender.
“How could this happen?” he said to The Dartmouth. “I hope they get to the bottom of this.”
Another student, Gillian Yue ’22, who received the email also spoke to The Dartmouth.
“I was pretty upset seeing the email, especially since it wasn’t the first one — two similar emails were sent to me in the guise of another Dartmouth student during winter break,” Yue said.
Dartmouth has condemned the emails.
“We find the language contained in the emails abhorrent and antithetical to our community values and standards. This investigation is a high priority for the college and we continue to pursue the matter actively,” said spokeswoman Diana Lawrence.
