Tennis star Alex Eala, giant killer, moves to the semi-finals of DC Open

Alexandra Eala is upending higher seeded players enroute to the semifinals of the DC Open.

Filipina tennis phenom Alexandra Eala is lighting up the Mubadala DC Open, continuing her historic, giant-killing run by qualifying for the semifinals with a straight-sets demolition of No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4. 

The 21-year-old’s journey through the Washington brackets is proving to the tennis world that Asian athletes are not just participating—they are dominating at the highest levels of the sport.

Eala's path to the final four has been an absolute gauntlet, proving her resilience as she repeatedly takes down the game's biggest icons.

First, she stunned Olympic Gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, establishing a fierce pattern of baseline dominance.

Next, Eala outlasted No. 7 seed and reigning tournament champion Leylah Fernandez in an earlier round.

Yesterday, Eala weathered a chaotic opening of five straight service breaks against Svitolina. She erased a 3-1 deficit in the second set, forcing Svitolina into a match-ending double fault.

Osaka vs. Eala

This triumph marks Eala's staggering sixth victory over a Top 10 player this season. Next up, she faces a highly anticipated semifinal clash against third-seeded Naomi Osaka. Osaka and Eala have never faced each other in an official professional match before.

Osaka is coming off a tough match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. At the end of the day, Osaka was simply relieved to still be in contention after grinding out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Cocciaretto.

"Overall this match was really tough, and it felt more like a mental match than an actual tennis match," Osaka said in her post-match press conference. "I don't feel like I played that well, but it was more fighting through every point. I think what (Cocciaretto) did well today was -- I guess she was really inside of the court on my second serve, so I did feel a little bit of pressure."
