EMILY M. CHEUNG |
You've probably seen the Volvo commercial featuring an opera singer singing a beautiful aria. It features an opera singer hitting some other worldly notes.
The singer is Emily M. Cheung of Canada.
On her LinkedIn page, she writes: "Professional singer foremost - living in Europe for 6 years, I embraced my desire to diversify my lifepaths. Therefore, when not performing, you can find me instructing yoga practitioners, sculpting eyebrows or modeling for artists!"
After living in Europe the past six years and performing around the world, she recently became part of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. she is known for her clarity of tone and engaging stage presence.
Cheung is also one of the founding members of international group Time Ensemble, whose mission is to inspire children through music in communities in need around the world.
Even for someone - admittedly - not that well versed about the intricacies of opera, I can tell this is difficult song to sing.
The aria is "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" ("Hell's vengeance boils in my heart") sung by the Queen of the Night, in Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute (1791).
Sometimes it's worth not knowing. As it turns out, the beauty of the singing doesn't match the rather dreadful lyrics where the queen tells her daughter that if she doesn't kill the high priest, she'll disown her and curse her. Wow! Imagine the mom issues coming out of that relationship.
But, what the heck does that have to do about selling a car?
