A councilwoman in the San Francisco Bay Area is pledging to continue her fight for diversity despite a rock thrown through her window, reports the Mercury News.
Amourence Lee says the rock shattered her front window which is graced with the American flag and the words “dignity, liberty, justice for all.”
Lee has been an outspoken advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement and LGBTQ rights. She is also the first Asian American woman to serve on the San Mateo City Council. The city has been rocked with anti-Asian graffiti.
Police say they don’t know if she was targeted because of her ethnicity or her advocacy.
“We’re investigating if it meets the elements of a hate crime,” police spokesman Officer Michael Haobsh said to the San Mateo Daily Journal.
Lee has been vocal since the incident and has both blogged about it and talked about it on social media. Lee believes it was retribution for raising the rainbow flag at city hall with the LGBTQ community just the night. before the incident.
“This rock could’ve come and hit my family, my daughter. This is violence in our community,” she said in a video posted on Facebook.
