Diane Gujarati has been nominated for a federal judgeship. |
ASAM NEWS
Donald Trump announced on Monday (Apr. 8) that he intends to renominate Indian American prosecutor Diane Gujarati for a judicial post, along with eleven other individuals, India West reports.
If confirmed, Gujarati would serve as a district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York
Gujarati graduated from Yale Law School. After graduation, she clerked Judge John M. Walker Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Gujarati currently serves as a district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and has taught at New York University Law School as an adjunct professor until earlier this year. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Asian American Bar Association of New York.
Gujarati was previously nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2016, but his nomination expired in 2017. Trump renominated her in May of 2018 and the nomination made it to the Senate in November 2018.
Shortly after the nomination expired for a second time after being backlogged in the Senate. However, according to Business Standard, her nomination was not pushed through because of ideological grounds. She currently has the support of Trump and both Democratic New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
