TGIF Friday: Dakila - a blast from the past - plays this Sunday

The 2019 version of Dakila, from L to R: Amado Tuazon, Gabe DelRosario, Ron Mesina, Eddie Lastra Back L-R; David Bustamante, Ace Olfr

If you're a Filipino American of a certain age and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, you might remember a band called Dakila. You might have danced to their Latino, salsa, rock music.

Congas, timbales, guitars and brass created a beat that you couldn't help but sway to.

In the late 60s and early 70's, there was a wave of Latin-Rock bands that came out of . Latino neighborhoods: Malo. Azteca. Santana, which has become legendary with its lead guitarist Carlos Santana, came out of this milieu.

Straight out of San Francisco's Mission District, Dakila was one of these bands. They stood out because it was composed of Filipino Americans and they used Tagalog lyrics. Somewhere in my LP collection (Remember those?) I've got their albun.

Dakila started out playing Santana covers and went on to become one of the first Filipino American groups to land a major record deal. Their 1972 debut album would be the band’s only release, but in the years since, they’ve developed a cult following.

After 50 years, the legendary band has been revived and will be playing Sunday, Aug. 18, at Undiscovered SF’s Sunday Streets event iat 2 p.m.

The original SF Dakila band started in 1972 with a 5 year recording contract with Epic/Columbia Records only to disband after 2 years having historical performances at Bill Graham's Fillmore West, SF Winterland, major clubs in the SF Bay Area and countless universities and festivals.

The self-titled LP can be found on display at the Wing Luke Museum Exhibit for Asian America in Seattle, Washington as well as the Oakland Museum as one of the first Filipino American bands to record on a major label.

The free event, which sections off several blocks on Folsom Street, will have Filipino food, arts and crafts,
