Andrew Yang's presidential campaign is surprising long-time political pundits. |
ASAM NEWS
The Democrats keep raising the bar and Andrew Yang somehow manages to jump over it.
The upstart Democratic candidate for president became the 9th candidate this week to qualify to participate in the third Presidential debate in Houston in September.
According to Vox, to qualify, he needed to surpass 2% support in at least four polls between June 28 and August 28. He also needed at least 130,000 individual donors and 400 each in at least 20 states.
The fourth poll to give the former technology executive 2% is the Monmouth University poll of Iowa voters.
The 2% threshold is up from one percent in the first two debates, the New York Post reported.
“The country heard my message and is ready to talk about real solutions to gun violence, the new realities of the American economy, and how we measure our health and success as a nation,” Yang said in a statement Thursday. “I’m excited to have those conversations in Houston and throughout the 2020 election.”
There will be at least two Asian American candidates represented in the next Democrats' debate - California's Senator Kamala Harris is the other.

The third AAPI candidate, Hawaii Rep. Tusli Gabbard, has met the donor threshold, but still needs to hit the two percent threshold in three more polls. She must qualify by August 28.
Others to qualify are Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke, Cory Booker, and Amy Klobuchar.
NPR reported Yang’s campaign has “surprising momentum,” largely on the popularity of his freedom dividend which would give $1000 a month to every American adult.
The next debate will be in Houston and hosted and moderated by ABC News and Univision.
