SO WE went to all this trouble to make sure that the stars of the live-action movie Aladdin were culturally appropriate and fans were awarded with a nearly all-Asian cast led by Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott.
The big exception though was Will Smith, who was cast as the genie. In the stills released by Disney exclusively to Entertainment Week, the African American comedian's genie drew sharp criticism for blue-facing the character that was based on the 1989 animated movie in the genie's skin color is -- blue!
The online reaction was so intense that Smith felt compelled to tweet reassuring fans of the animated Aladdin, voiced by the late Robin Williams, that in the film, the genie's skin will be blue.
One fan, Kevin Sparrow, took the matter into his own hands and sent out his doctored picture of the Entertainment Weekly cover.
The movie is supposed to be released in the summer of 2019.
