Netflix releases trailer for upcoming documentary series 'Naomi Osaka'

Since Naomi Osaka's upset win over tennis legend Serena Williams three years ago, the picture that emerged was that of an introvert, a shy young woman uncomfortable in the public eye, conscious of maintaining her squeaky, clean image.

That's about to change. "Now, I don’t care what anyone has to say," says the young woman.

“I feel like the platform that I have right now is something that I used to take for granted, and for me, I feel like I should be using it for something,” Osaka said in the official press release. “I believe, instead of following, you have to make your own path.”

The streaming network released a trailer on Tuesday about the tennis star who is discovering the power of her public platform to express her previously private views on racial justice and the attacks on Asian Americans.

In the trailer for "Naomi Osaka," she talks about her parents -- her mother is from Japan and her father is from Haiti and her decision outwardly support the Black Lives Matter movement by wearing masks bearing the names of the Black men and women who were killed.

The series will cover Naomi’s pivotal year, from the US Open in August 2019 and on tour with the tennis star as she plays in each of the Grand Slams and prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Spending time with her during a hectic training and travel schedule, the crew explores the immense pressure she’s under, her journey of self-discovery, off-season time digging into her interests and her well-known, quirky and honest personality. They also travel with Naomi to Japan to understand her deep connection with the country she represents and the reflections of her multi-cultural identity.

“To be able to tell my story and let people in during this big year, working with a team that really understands me, has been a rewarding experience,” Osaka said, according to a press release at the time. “It won’t look like a traditional sports documentary, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.”

The 23-year old tennis player ranked No. 2 in the world made headlines recently by withdrawing from the French Oopen and Wimbledon for mental health reasons.

"Naomi Osaka" will air on Netflix, beginning July 16, a week before Osaka is expected  return to the courts to play for Japan in the Tokyo Olympics.
