Filipino Americans and organizations from six Bay Area counties have formed regional Bay Area Filipino Complete Count Committee (BAFCCC) ahead of the 2020 census, NBC News Bay Area reports.
The BAFCCC’s goal is to ensure an accurate count of Filipinos in the Bay Area. Its tagline is “Kabilang Tayo sa Kinabukasan”, “Be Counted for our Future.”
An accurate count, the committee says, will help give the Filipino community the financial resources and political representation it deserves.
Around 500,000 Filipinos live in the Bay Area. This means the Bay Area is home to roughly 12 percent of America’s Filipino population and 30 percent of California’s Filipino population.
The committee plans to use the knowledge and expertise of locals and community organizations to pinpoint which Filipinos in the Bay Area are most vulnerable to an undercount. It also has developed an outreach and education campaign to teach others how they can make sure they are counted. Recently, they partnered with the Oakland A’s and attended a game to share more information about the 2020 census.
