Video goes viral as teacher empowers students with Lizzo hit song "Truth Hurts"

A Filipina American teacher's video of her 2nd grade class singing a version of rapper Lizzo's hit "Truth Hurts" went viral after the rapper retweeted the video with the remixed lyrics.

Lizzo's "Truth Hurts" made history last month as the longest-running No. 1 single from a female rap artist.
while the original lyrics weren’t exactly appropriate for children, the infectious musical hook to the song was perfect.

The song is about boy problems, but teacher Dorothy Honey Mallari reworked the lyrics to focus on empowering her students at Los Medanos Elementary School in Pittsburg, California, a suburb of Oakland.

Mallari apparently rewrites lyrics every year with whatever song is popular at the moment. This year, it was "Truth Hurts."

"Let's be great, 'cause I know we are great!" That's the empowering  lyrics Mallari recently instilled in her second grade students when she taught them a remixed version of Lizzo's "Truth Hurts."

“And when the song came on — the Kid’s Bop version — they were really digging it,” Mallari said. “And so I said, ‘OK, this is the song we’re going to do it to.'”

Dorothy Honey Mallari connects with her students via song and - uh - desk dancing.

The California Bay Area educator turned the No. 1 single into an anthem for her class and captured their energetic cover on camera — desk dancing and all.

Mallari's version goes like this: "Let's be great, 'cuz I know we are great. Whoo! I just took an ELA test, turns out I'm 100 percent that smart."

The rest of the lyrics touch on having your friends back and helping others with their homework.

The Pittsburg Unified School District shared the class's empowering video on YouTube and it also made its rounds on Twitter, where the clip quickly went viral. Even Lizzo chimed in with her support and wrote, "Ur right.. this IS the best thing I've watched today 😍."

By Wednesday (Nov. 6) evening, just over 24 hours after it was originally posted, the video had amassed over 169,000 views on Facebook.

“When we get the rules in, like, a song, then it gets us focused. It gets us ready,” said 7-year-old student Jefer Borrios to CBS News.

And because it is a group effort, the song has brought the classmates closer together.

“It makes us feel happy in the morning and it makes us feel like a family,” said 8-year old Hayden Wiebe, surrounded by her classmates.
