AAPI artists walk away with a big haul in the Peoples Choice Awards

Dwayne Johnson and K-pop boy band BTS were the big winners of the Peoples' Choice Awards held Tuesday in Santa Monica, winning three awards each.

Long a wildly popular and one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, Samoan American "the Rock" Johnson was chosen as the Peoples Champion, Comedy Movie Star (in Jungle Cruise) and the  Male Movie Star for 2021.

BTS, the 7-member South Korean pop act won the Group of 2021 and both the Song of the Year and the year's Music Video for their hit single “Butter.”

Filipino American pop artist Olivia Rodrigo's first album "Sour" won Album of the Year and the New Artist award.

Shang -Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings won Best Action Movie. The Marvel hero earned Action Star of the Year for Simu Liu.

Mindy Kaling's television sitcom depicting the travails of an Indian American teenager Never Have I Ever, won Best TV Comedy Series.

The South Korean dystopian television series Squid Games, won Best Binge-worthy Show.

Unlike the better known industry awards the Oscars and Emmys, the fans' voting reflected the diversity they seek in their entertainment. Audiences flock to television and movies that have diverse casts, according to studies by UCLA and USC. AAPI stars and music acts won a big haul as fan favorites.
