Dear Abby stirs controversy with "name" advice

ADVICE from "Dear Abby" about Indian baby names is being roundly condemned.
Jeanne Phillips, who took over the advice column from her late mother Pauline in 2002, suggested foreign names would subject children to teasing in school and “saddle kids” later in life.

It was not surprising that her advice was met with a backlash from women who had unique names like Padma and Soledad.

Padma Lakshimi, host of the reality cooking competition Top Chef.

And journalist Soledad O'Brien added her low-key response.

More responses from other South Asians:

This is not a new debate limited to the Indian American community. Asians and other people of color have wrestled with this question.
