The past week in history also coincides with Thurgood Marshall’s birthday, the beginning of oral arguments on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, and Marshall’s appointment as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
Both of Justice Marshall's sons, Thurgood Jr. and John, had careers in public service before working in the private sector.
Of his father's legacy, Thurgood Marshall, Jr. said, "One, he was part of a group of people... who all came together at the right time to steer the country on the right course with regard to equality, especially in education," and "I also like to think of his legacy as one of encouraging lawyers of every color to contribute their skills to society."
