Sikh float in Rose parade has the theme of 'Serving Kindness'

THE ROSE PARADE  in Pasadena this year featured a Sikh float for the fourth straight year.
The practice of “langar,” or free kitchen, is integral to Sikhism, the world’s fifth-largest religion with more than 20 million followers globally.

Members of the Southern California Sikh community highlighted this religious tenet, which makes a free community kitchen a part of every Sikh temple. It’s a place where visitors can get a vegetarian meal regardless of caste, religion or stature in society.
Previoussymbolizes the world’s largest free kitchen at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, where 100,000 people are fed each day.

Its title, “Serving Kindness,” honors Sikh teachings of selfless service and equality through langar, a free community kitchen, and aligns with the Sikh tradition in which divisions based on differences and status of religions, caste, color, age, gender and social status are removed to make way for sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness.

The China Airlines float won the International Award for most outstanding float from outside the United States.
