For those interested in the history of Filipino Americans, this 2-day event is a good introduction to the history of the third largest Asian community in the United States.
The online Zoom offering by the Filipino American History National Society this coming weekend, Oct. 7 and 8, is is being hosted by FAHNS co-founder Dorothy Cordova and journalist Emil Guillermo.
FYI: 1898 is the theme of this year's Filipino American History Month.
There's no better time for anyone interested in knowing more about the complex relationship between the United States and the Philippines and the often overlooked events that continue to affect Filipino Americans.
2023 marks the 125th Anniversary of the end of the Spanish American War and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898. The latter event made the Philippine Islands an American colony and Filipinos became American “nationals” who could come here without passports – if their boat passage was paid.
Participants can learn Filipino American history by the makers of this history with story tellers sharing family stories of why and when they came and interesting vignettes of parents or themselves.
