Maryland: Indian American makes history with election victory

Indian American Aruna Miller wins second highest post in Maryland.

Aruna Miller made history when she was elected Maryland's Lt. Governor Tuesday. She is the first Indian American to win that state office, the second highest post in Maryland.

“Ever since I came to this country in 1972, I've never stopped being excited for the promise of America. I will never stop fighting to make sure that promise is available to everyone. And this promise begins with a commitment to deliver a Maryland where we leave no one behind,” she said.

The 58-year-old Democrat is said to have her roots in Hyderabad and immigrated to the United States with her family as a 7-year old.

She ran for Congress in 2018 after serving in the Maryland House of Delegates for eight years.

Aruna is married to Dave Miller, with whom she has three daughters. She currently resides in Montgomery County.

She graduated from the Missouri University of Science and Technology with a degree in civil engineering in 1989, and worked for 25 years at the local Department of Transportation in Montgomery County.

“As voting took place Tuesday, she tweeted: There’s no place I’d rather be than with voters! Our community has pushed us to be our best selves this campaign and I cannot even begin to put my gratitude into words for your commitment and support."
