Santa Rosa Police Detective Marylou Hernandez Armer, 43, a resident of American Canyon in Napa County, was a 20-year veteran of the SRPD said Police Chief Ray Navarro in a statement.
Armer's latest assignment was on the domestic violence sexual assault team and worked with the Family Justice Center, said Navarro
“She was just a bright light,” said Christine Castillo, chief of Verity, the Santa Rosa-based nonprofit that serves and advocates for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. “The next brilliant star you see in the sky, that will be her.”
She started as a field evidence technician in 1999 and became a police officer in 2008 for Santa Rosa, about 55 miles north of San Francisco.
Navarro and Armer worked with each other when she was a field evidence tech and he supervised her on one of his early overnight shifts, according to an internal memo about her death.
“She was always proactive and there with a smile,” he wrote. “We are all going to miss her terribly.”
“This is a tragic event. It hurts,” a grieving SRPD colleague and friend, Stephen Bussell, said at a City Hall news conference Wednesday, April 1.
Members of the public interested in making donations in honor of Armer are asked to do so to the family assistance fund organized by PORAC, or to Verity or YWCA Sonoma County.
The PORAC fund is at porac.org/fund-a-hero or 4010 Truxel Road, Sacramento 95834.
Verity is at ourverity.org or 835 Piner Road, Suite D, Santa Rosa 95403.

Armer often brought homemade lumpia, the Filipino version of a spring roll, to department celebrations or just when she felt like it. Her friends in the department said they would disappear quickly. "They were delicious," recalled Navarro.
“We wanted to honor Marylou as much as we could,” Navarro said. He said the department has begun a conversation with the detective’s family about how they might honor her more fully once large assemblies are allowed. He said Armer's relatives have asked that for now, no information be released about the family.
