Trump's Easter rant: No more DACA!

AN HOUR after tweeting "Happy Easter," Donald Trump tweeted this:

Perhaps he's forgotten that he's the one who created this human crisis by declaring last Septemeber the end of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

He had hoped that in six months Congress would come up with a legislative solution that would replace President Obama's executive order creating DACA.

Obama had to resort to an executive order because the GOP-dominated Congress refused to act on some of the problems facing the U.S. immigration policies.

Trump's plan hit a roadblock when the courts ordered the DACA program remain in effect until Congress could come up with a plan to deal with the young people who were brought into the U.S. with their undocumented parents.

Then, when Congress did come up with some bipartisan proposals last month, Trump worked against their passage because they didn't fully support his radical immigration agenda that would cut legal immigration in half and curtail the family reunification principles that has guided U.S. policy for decades.

Trump never cared about DACA or the 800,000 young people who have already enrollled int he program. He just wanted a bargaining chip for the wall that he promised during his presidential campaign.

Apparently, what got Trump tweeting like a spoiled child who didn't get his way, was the Buzzfeed story about about a thousand Central Americans marching across Mexico towards the U.S. border unimpeded by Mexican authorities.

The story says the mass movement, mischaracterized as a "caravan" of border crosserss  was organized by an immigrant advocacy group called Pueblo Sin Frontieras (People without Borders). The people, mostly Hondurans, with their annual march, were trying to bring attention to the situation in their country rife with violence from criminal gangs, police and the military.

No doubt, some of them would attempt to enter the U.S. illegally, but that was not the purpose of the demonstrators.

Whether they make it across the border into the U.S. remains to be seen since the U.S. border guards are monitoring the group's movements.

Trump is mixing apples and oranges when he calls for the end of DACA and says that these people are taking advantage of DACA.

DACA is for the young people who were brought into the U.S. as children before 2014. None of the would-be border crossers would qualify for the program.

But Trump is looking for something to divert attention away from his sexual dalliances and relationship with Russians. Painting immigrants as criminals is red meat for his base and just the thing to get them all riled up over the wrong issue.

"Happy Easter" ... indeed! (Sarcasm, folks.)

UPDATED: 12:30 am, April 3, to correct the characterization of the Honduran demostration.
