TGIF Feature: Bravo to present an Indian American reality show

For better or worse, the Indian American community needs to gird itself as Bravo introduces American TV audiences to the reality show Family Karma.

Family Karma, the docu-series, premieres this March, giving viewers a never-before-seen glimpse inside the complicated lives of seven young attractive Indian American friends as they try and strike a balance between following their own paths and living their own dreams in Miami, while also staying true to their families' traditions.

The friends -- Anisha Ramakrishna, Vishal Parvani, Amrit Kapai, Brian Benni, Monica Vaswani, Bali Chainani, and Shaan Patel, as well as their close-knit families -- will be the focus of the show.

"Our parents basically founded this community," says Amrit Kapai, a lawyer who started his career in Chicago and is currently working to grow the firm's Miami branch. "They had arranged marriages we had arranged friendships," he continues.

Growing up in traditional, multigenerational households, this group is bonded by their strong cultural ties and vibrant Miami social lives. With parents and grandparents instilling their cherished customs, and adult children who are drifting more towards the “American Way,” the two worlds collide in the most unexpected ways, says a Bravo press release.

These friends are determined to live life to the fullest, navigate the pressures of being in adulthood, while maintaining their deep-rooted ties to an incredible culture, Bravo continues.

As in Bravo's other so-called reality show, The Shahs of Sunset, viewers can expect a lot of interpersonal conflicts and culture clashes, which some critics point out might be exaggerated in order to boost the entertainment factor. That is the drawback of shows like this; it shows the subjects'-- warts and all.

The Family Karma premieres Sunday, March 8 at 9/8c on Bravo.
