Survey: Top concerns of AAPI women

A SURVEY conducted for the YWCA found the top three concerns among Asian American and Pacific Islander women are also three of the most high profile issues of last  year. Sixty percent of AAPI women are very worried about keeping their family safe from gun violence. That’s 16 percent greater than all women overall.

Christine Chen, founding director of APIAVote, says the findings by the YWCA mirror findings in a 2016 poll and another one about to be released in one week. In that poll, she says 86 percent of Asian Americans listed gun control as a very important issue. That’s up 9 percent from 2016.

The YWCA poll was conducted by American Viewpoint and Lake Research Partners. 1,038 adult woman were polled including 100 Asian American Pacific Islander women. The poll was entitled What Woman Want 2018.

In that poll, 42 percent of AAPI women polled were very worried about being able to pay for health care.

Thirty percent of all Asian American Pacific Islander women are worried about being sexually harassed. That’s 13 percent more than women overall.

"Many times we're not part of the conversation,” said Chen of APIA Vote. “The data is not there and we’re the fastest growing population.”

She’s particularly excited because she’s seeing more political resources being poured into states this election with large APIA populations such as Nevada, Minnesota, Virginia and New Jersey.
