A DISAPPOINTING SEASON ust got worse for San Francisco Giants fans.
Pitcher Derek Holland had to apologize after being called out by a reporter on Twitter for impersonating an Asian accent during an interview with the MLB Network.
Bleacher Report writer Joon Lee got hold of a videotape of the incident and posted it on social media.
Holland was joined in the interview by Giants massage therapist Haro Ogawa who quickly became the butt of Holland’s jokes, according to the East Bay Times
USA Today reports the pitcher has issued an apology to Ogawa and another Asian employee on the team.
“They understand we were just doing a bit but it was too far, “he said. “With that, I want to make sure that everybody understands that those were not the intentions …I apologize for what I have done. Whatever I have to do to take care of the situation, I will do it.”
Holland called the incident an embarrassment and said it “was all on me.”
The Giants, who have promoted several events targeting the Asian American Pacific Islander community during the season, also issued a statement.
“The Giants organization does not condone that type of behavior in any way. We spoke to Derek regarding his interview yesterday and he completely understands the severity of the situation and apologizes if it offended anyone.”
