DONALD TRUMP and his staffers evidently have a hard time distinguishing one Asian from another.
During Trump's embarrassing G20 dive, a White House news release misidentified Xi Jinping as the leader of “the Republic of China.”
The Republic of China is what Taiwan calls itself. Xi is the president of the People's Republic of China. Oops!
China's Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China received an apology on Monday, (July 10) from the United States. Geng told reporters in Beijing that U.S. officials described the mistake as a technical error.
That explanation might be OK if it was the only mistake last weekend. Earlier the same day as the China gaff, they incorrectly referred to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as “President Abe of Japan” in a news release detailing Trump’s meeting with the Japanese leader. However, Trump did correctly refer to the leader of Japan as prime minister during his remarks.
Then, Trump in one of his infamous tweets, he also mixed up Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
