IT'S WAY TOO EARLY to tell if its a trend or not, but another television sitcom will feature an Asian American family besides Fresh Off The Boat, which ABC last week renewed for a second season.

Dr. Ken, a comedy starring Community‘s Ken Jeong has been given the thumbs up by ABC for a pilot.
Jeong won't have to work too hard in his new role, he was a licensed physician and worked as an internist before quitting to pursue comedy. Dr. Ken stars Jeong as a frustrated HMO doctor juggling medicine, marriage and parenting, and succeeding at none of them.
Helping him manage his mid-life crisis is his family, including Suzy Nakamura as Dr. Ken's wife Allison, Albert Tsai as Jeong's son and Krista Marie Yu as his teenage daughter. Tisha Campbell-Martin, Dave Foley and Jonathan Slavin round out the cast as friends and coworkers.
Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow
He is one of the busiest Asian American actors in Hollywood. This is Jeong’s second comedy pilot, in which he plays a version of himself. He also has Ken Jeong Made Me Do It, which reportedly is still in contention at MTV. Jeong is a series regular on Community, which is ending with the upcoming sixth season on Yahoo Screen.
He is also a regular in the Hangover motion picture franchise and taken some heat from the Asian American community for the over-the-top ridiculous character he plays, Mr. Chow.

While we celebrate the possibility of doubling the number of shows featuring Asian families, we also have to note that Mindy Kaling's sitcom The Mindy Project, which had been struggling in the ratings despite Kaling's willingness to be a bit risqué by commenting on some of today's social mores.

UPDATE: Kaling show goes to Hulu

In an upcoming interview with InStyle magazine, Kaling hinted,  "I can just say that I don't think it's over for these characters," which feeds into the rumors that the show may do its fourth season on another network.

Don't mourn for Mindy. The comedienne/writer/producer is keeping herself busy. You'll find her on the cover of InStyle's June issue looking gorgeous, as if to say, "Take that, Fox."

Also in June, the Disney/Pixar animated Inside Out, she conveys a mix of snobbery and revulsion to achieve her character, Disgust.

In the fall, she'll be promoting her latest book "Why Not Me," a followup on her hilarious best seller "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?"
