First South Asian woman mayor in the U.S. takes office



SADAF JAFFER has become the first South Asian woman mayor in both New Jersey and the United States., reports India Abroad.
The News India Times reports the Pakistani American has dedicated her career to social justice and human rights. She’s served in both the United States Marine Corps Center for Advanced Operational Culture Learning and the U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of South Asian Affairs”.

As mayor, she hope to bring her constituents together and inspire others to become more involved with local and national governance.

“To me, Montgomery is all about the people that make up our vibrant community,” Jaffer said to India Abroad.

She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at Princeton University in South Asian Studies, teaching classes ranging from South Asian, Islamic and Asian American studies. She is also the Somerset County director for the South Asian American Caucus of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and was selected to be in the inaugural training class of Emerge New Jersey, a political training program for Democratic women.

She said one of her favorite past times is to attend local events in the city because of the vibrant community she believes Montgomery is. Due to her strong sense in community, she believes that she will be able to be an active voice for her local residents in order to provide the change they are seeking.
