ASIAN AMERICAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER VOTERS are notorious for not voting. Of the various ethnic groups, members of the AAPI community have the lowest voter registration record.
There are various reasons for the poor showing among AAPI; language difficulties, cultural suspicions, and -- frankly -- groups that should be anxiious to recruit more AAPI voters like the major political parities, have done a poor job in reaching out to this community.
And yet, policies born in city hall, state legislatures and the U.S. Congress affect AAPI just as much as other people.
Wonder why the Donald Trump administration is coming down so hard on friends and family who are immigrants -- undocumented and legal?
Why can't your uncle and aunt come to the U.S. to visit?
Why is your child's school doing a poor job in educating your kids?
Why is it too difficult to find an affordable health plan?
These are all policies created by politicians and they get their ideas and inspirations from ordinary people and powerful corporations. While most of us don't have the big bucks to influence politicians, what we do have is the vote. To politicians, your vote is a valuable as a monetary donation.
And if you don't vote -- which a lot of AAPI people eligible to vote choose not to do -- you lose out and the politicians end up making terrible policies and laws that hurt you, your family and your community.
So vote!
